Tenby in the winter - absolute bliss! #Pembrokeshire

View from bedroom at Giltar Hotel, Tenby
I really have to start this blog saying that I truly have the best job in the world!  I get to visit the most loveliest of places and feel truly blessed!  This week I've been lucky enough to spend a couple of days in South Pembrokeshire, and in particular Tenby!

Now most people would assume the Tenby is a summer town.  Don't get me wrong, the place is absolutely stunning when the warm sun is out but there is something beautiful about this place in the Winter.

We were lucky enough to stay in the well known Giltar Hotel overlooking South Beach!  The premier room we had was lush and the view was amazing - not to mention the standard of the rooms.  Absolutely love this place!   So here is why I think you should visit Tenby in the Winter....

  • Adults Only - well, not completely as I'm sure you'll be able to spot the odd child or two (It's not quite like a scene out of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang with the Child Catcher), but as the kids are in school a mid week stay means that it's just so peaceful!
  • Romantic - strolling around the quiet streets of the walled town of Tenby in the evening wrapped up nice and warm and glancing into the quiet pubs, restaurants and closed shops is just lovely!
  • Peaceful - walking along the esplanade overlooking the beach with just the sound of the waves or sitting in the hotel room with the window open hearing the waves crashing is such a rare sound (no matter where you go)
  • Traditional Tenby - I'm not a massive party goer but Tenby is well known for it's Stag & Hen parties - we didn't see one on our visit (thankfully - but possibly something to do with the fact we did go there on a Monday!).  But what was lovely was having the pubs lined with local fishermen having a pint in front of the log fires watching a fishing programme!  Quite amusing really!!!
  • Car Parking - During the summer months you are more than likely have to park in one of the car parks (with a fee), however the winter and lack of crowds means that you're likely to find a free spot (simple things please simple minds and all that!!) - managed to bag a free place right outside of the hotel (even though they have a little car park around the front, decided to make the most of the free space!)  Both convenient and cost effective!
As you've probably seen from previous posts I'm not quite the food critique so I wasn't that adventurous with my food - but the Chicken Jalfrezi at the Hope & Anchor was delicious and highly recommended.  Cute pub on the main stretch, comfortable seating and an interesting collection of real ale labels on the walls indicating they have guest beers in.

Found the video below of the Hope & Anchor - this was likely to have been taken in the busier times as there were just a few fisherman sat at the bar and a couple of other couples dotted around having food!

The only downside to visiting Tenby in the Winter is that not all shops are open - so if you're planning to spend time having a browse for some gifts then it maybe a little limited!  But who goes to Tenby to go shopping eh?!  (Although I must admit there was a shop called Joys that I was gutted wasn't open on the Monday & Tuesday as I liked a few things in the window - just another excuse to make another day trip down there!!!)
